The Legacy Of Thomas Jefferson - 1060 Words

Thomas Jefferson was born April 13, 1743, in Shadwell, Virginia. His mother was Jane Randolph Jefferson, his father was Peter Jefferson, and he was the third of ten children. As a child he liked to explore in the woods, play the violin, and read. In 1757 he started attending a private school run by Reverend William Douglas and Reverend James Maury in which he studied Latin, Greek, mathematics, and literature. After studying there for three years he went to The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. He studied there for three years, and then studied law under Wythe for five years. In 1767 he won admission to Virginia Bar. From 1767 through 1764 he practiced law. He took up many cases and won a large majority of them. During that time he also met and married Martha Wayles Skelton, and they had six children together, only two of which lived until adulthood. Jefferson’s political career began in 1768 when he was elected to the House of Burgesses where he prom oted America’s independence from England. He also wrote his first major political composition, â€Å"A Summary View of the Rights of British America† which gained him the reputation as the most eloquent writer of the American cause. In 1775 he attended the Second Continental Congress In June of 1776 Congress put Jefferson with a five-man committee composed of himself, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston to draft the Declaration of Independence.
